Mike's CNC Wood Signs
" A litte about myself "
Hi, my name is Mike Kearns. Since you've taken the interest to come to my site, I assume you are interested in purchasing a sign or a plaque for yourself, a loved one or perhaps a friend. Before you spend your hard earned money, you should at least now something about the person you are going to do business with.
Hopefully that person will be me.
I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska and am still a Lincoln resident today. I started my woodworking career in 1968 as a framing carpenter, and continued that craft until 1989. That year I decided that after 21 years of framing houses, my back had endured enough abuse. That's when I decided to go into the finish carpentry field. I performed finish carpentry in residential construction for a major home builder in Lincoln for the past 22 years. I still do finish work for them on occasion.
One day I witnessed a gentleman freehand carving a sign at the fair. I was so intrigued by his skill, I decided to give it a try myself. I soon found out, it wasn't quite as easy as he made it look. I searched the internet for anything I could find about sign carving, and even bought a set of video tutorials about freehand carving signs with a router. After countless hours of practice and a lot of sacrificed pieces of wood, I too became efficient at the craft.
After about five years of freehand carving and a large number of satisfied customers later, I became fascinated with CNC technology. After many hours of research on the subject, and being fairly mechanically inclined myself. Most of which was taught to me by my father Dale Kearns, I decided to build a machine of my own. It took me about eight months to build the machine, which is almost totally hand fabricated, piece by piece from the ground up. It was finally finished, and after some adjustments and fine tuning it was time to give it a test run. I started it up and to my amazement, it carved just as it was designed to do. What a thrill that was! I thought to myself, WOW, I actually built a machine that is controlled by a computer that will carve signs.
Building this machine has given me a great sense of accomplishment and enjoyment. It has also greatly increased my ability to give you an attractive sign or plaque that you will be proud to display. Thanks for visiting my site.
